Celebrating AAG volunteers

Next week is National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. Running from 15 to 21 May, the theme for 2023 is The Change Makers. It’s a perfect opportunity for us to formally thank everyone who contributes their time, expertise and insights to enable AAG to be a leader in the conversation on ageing … to be The Change Makers in ageing!

AAG’s history and future are inextricably linked with the knowledge, skill and time of our volunteers. Although the commitment of our volunteers varies considerably with the role undertaken, we acknowledge the importance of each one’s contribution to our ongoing success. Our Board members are all volunteers, as are members of the AAG Research Trust , AAG divisional committees, special interest groups (SIGs), the Student and Early Career Group (SECG) and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG). Add to those the volunteer conference chairs and committee members, and abstract and grant reviewers, and members who represent AAG on specialist panels. There are many other occasions which are made successful by our volunteers.

We know that most of you offer your time and effort to AAG in addition to demanding day jobs and busy home lives. To each of you, we say ‘thank you’. We couldn’t do all of this without you.

AAG 500 blog: The hallmarks of ageing

In our May AAG 500 blog, we’re pleased to share a contribution from Dr Cecilia Gomez-Inclan, AAG’s Research and Policy Officer.

In this month’s blog, Cecilia shares her interest in the ageing process as a whole, ‘from cells to policy’ as she says. As she presents the underlying biological mechanisms of ageing, she has turned a complex subject into something we can all understand.

We invite AAG members to contribute to the AAG 500 blog. Get in touch if you’d like to suggest a topic or write a piece.

Research Incubator 2023 to improve carer health and wellbeing

AAG member, Sarah Judd-Lam, Executive Manager, Policy, Development and Research at Carers NSW has brought to our attention the 2023 Carer Knowledge Exchange Research Incubator, that would be of interest to our greater membership. Presenting on the first day will be Professor Keith Hill, AAG Life Member and director of the Rehabilitation, Ageing and Independent Living (RAIL) Research Centre, one of AAG’s collaborating research centres. Keith is also Grants Committee Program Lead for the Strategic Innovation Program of the AAG Research Trust.

This event aims to identify gaps in knowledge, research and policy to inform future research directions and policy development and implementation in relation to improving the health and wellbeing of carers. Over three days, there will be a series of short online sessions, plus an in-person satellite event in hosted by RAIL. Carers NSW will soon be holding the 2023 Carer Knowledge Exchange Research Incubator.
